My Role

During the development of F1 2021 I continued as part of the Internet Test Lab QA team responsible for all online game modes and services for F1 2021. As a part of this team, I was continually working individually as well as in small and large teams to meet submission deadlines and to achieve a high standard of work. During F1 2021’s development I used the skills I had learnt and developed from the development of F1 2020 and continued to improve on these, while also taking more responsibility in my role.

As part of the team, I worked across the three major game platforms: XBOX, PlayStation and PC, some of my tasks included:

  • Daily use of JIRA to submit, track and verify bugs.

  • Creating high quality bug reports with clear MOR's and clean and concise information.

  • The use of TestRail for functional and online test cases to ensure build quality for certification, launch and post launch patches.

  • Working effectively and efficiently while using collaboration tools such as Teams.

  • Leading tests of both small and large player counts, including specifically focused testing or looser general testing

  • Using platform specific testing tools such as Xbox Manager and PIX.

  • Working within the community post launch, on our support forums or other social media sites to ensure any unknown bugs are seen, reproduced, and then entered into the system to be reviewed by the development team.

After being part of the team that ensured the quality and functionality of the newly released podium pass on F1 2020, during F1 2021’s development I took on more responsibility in this role, becoming the main ITL QA tester for the system. This meant that I was working with specialized tools to debug and test the systems functionality, as well as working with the design team to try and create the most balanced and fair system possible for the player.

Some of the responsibilities that I had in this role included:

  • Ensuring that a large number of challenges functioned correctly over a variety of different game modes.

  • Testing the balance and reward of the challenges to provide the player with a fair but challenging experience.

  • Verifying the player is correctly awarded items they either unlock via the pass or purchase from the item shop and checking their functionality in game.

  • The use of specialized tools that allowed me to debug and test the functionality of the Podium Pass systems.

Being a part of the ITL team also meant working on the Esports side of the game. Working on and testing the Esports build came with its own unique challenges, such as tighter deadlines and working with specialized tools and hardware.
